Todd Thomas Brown

Todd Thomas Brown is a multi-practice artist engaged in visual arts, performance, and social practice. As a visual artist, Todd has 25 years combined experience in oil painting and mixed media. He has participated in artist residencies with San Francisco’s de Young Museum (2009) and Residencia el Otro Lado, Chiapas, MX. 2009/10), and was awarded a year long Artist Fellowship by the de Young Museum in 20011/12), funded by the James Irvine Foundation.  

As a performing artist, Todd has been awarded grants in disciplines of music and theater from the San Francisco Foundation, Zellerbach Family Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commission. He was a recipient of a 2006 Mastermind award in arts by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. His projects include collaborative music ensemble Nefasha Ayer - The Space of in Between, and the dance-theater production of Teobi's Dreaming - A performative Inquiry into Biology and Being. 

Todd has performed and/or presented work at Brava Theater, Z Space, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Stage Werx, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, Bumbershoot Festival, the de Young Museum, the Mondavi Center for Performing Arts, Vorpal Gallery, ArtMarket/Budapest, Hungary, the Errol Barrow Center for Creative Imagination in Bridgetown, Barbados, and La Noche and La Casona, in Lima, Peru. He has taught at the Perry Mansfield Performing Arts School and in the Architecture Department at the University of the Academy of Art in San Francisco.

 

Among Todd’s ongoing social practice projects is the Red Poppy Art House of San Francisco (2003-present), the Mission Arts & Performance Project/MAPP (2003-present), and Mission Stoop Fest (formerly Porch Performance Festival, 2014-present). In 2015, Todd was named to the YBCA 100 list, an annual compilation of the creative minds, makers, and pioneers that are asking the questions and making the provocations that are propelling new culture making across the nation. 

 

Today, Todd works as part-time Project Director for Flying Under the Radar Festival of the Arts, a bi-national festival framed around collaborative partnerships between artists of the San Francisco/Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while basing his practice out of Studio Teobi in San Francisco. Todd premiered his most recent performance work entitled This. Now. last February at Dance Mission Theater as part of the D.I.R.T. Festival. The second section of This. Now. will be presented as part of PUSHfest at ODC Theater in San Francisco in September 2016.
